The Eighth State

Although the weather has been disastrous the past few days, New Jersey is still proving to be a better experience than P.A. We finished our Pennsylvania trek with a stay in the Presbyterian Hostel at the Delaware Water Gap. It was an unexpected stay, Chase's right foot started giving him some serious trouble by Wednesday afternoon so we made the resolution to push on to the hostel, try to let injuries heal, and set out on Friday. We covered the miles at a sluggish speed, the trail is littered with rocks that make hiking painful, even in your best health. We made it to Mt. Minsi as twilight set in, but the view of the Delaware River was still awe inspiring and Mt. Tamany stood ominously across the water. The descent was treacherous in the dark but the promise of a shower kept us going. The hostel was wonderful, situated in the church basement, it included a bunk room, living room and bathroom. After a hot shower we caught up with Travis, a thru hiker we have been leap frogging, and met three others: daypack, Johnny blaze and nut hatch. They were all great and the night stretched on into the early morning.
Our zero day was full of rest and cultural indulging. We went into Stroudsburg and resupplied, saw the Great Gatsby and explored the artsy downtown of DWG. The rain and wind picked up over night and our crossing of the Delaware on Friday Morning was a bitter one.
Once atop the ridge we have been walking alongside cliffs with views of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, have seen some unexpected waterfalls, and enjoyed the southernmost Glacial ponds. A newly built beaver pond partially flooded the trail today but seeing their huts made the muddy mess worth it. With the exception of ticks, the wildlife has been amazing along with the increasingly beautiful scenery. We can't wait to get to the North and this taste of change is fuel to that fire. Time for bed...
Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

Blue Mountain

This is said to be the most difficult rock climb south of New Hampshire. It was challenging, but also a lot of fun!

Knife Edge

Today was most definitely an improvement from yesterday. We woke up to a misty morning but we were soon greeted by the warmth of the afternoon sun. Most of the day was pretty rocky but there were brief sections of long flat trail. The highlight for the day was for sure the knife edge, where you walk along a steep sharp ledge with views on both sides. Parts were pretty sketchy but we took our time and made it through unscathed. Chastan did slip towards the end on a wet rock, but made a quick recovery. We made it to camp just before eight. Now all we have to do is hike down what is said to be a steep decline to the spring for water, and then cook some grub before we hit the sack. Trying to get an early start tomorrow for a big day.

Killer Cows

Today started off like any other day. We woke up, made breakfast, and then proceeded to hike. It was a chilly one due to wind and the 53 degree high for day. It was an easy eight mile hike to Boiling Springs, PA. We grabbed dinner/lunch at this pizza place and got back on the trail. For eighteen miles today we hiked in the Cumberland Valley, which basically means that we hiked through farm after farm taking in the wonderful scenery that Pennsylvania has to offer. We ended up having to hike past dark today in order to make it to the shelter where we are sleeping. Just as the sun started to go down we noticed the trail passes through a pasture where many bulls are hanging out. I thought it was a little strange that the trail would lead us through there, but was not that alarmed at first. As soon as we got over the fence I could tell that these cows were not the nice cows you see in movies. They were demon cows. They were blocking the trail so we slowly approached while talking softly and nicely, but they didn't appreciate the gesture. They all started walking towards us, and this was when I knew it was going down. There were probably about 50 cows in all. We kept walking and as we walked they followed. Some of them started to charge but as they got close we would yell at them and act tough. They were all talk. The bulls would get scared and then several more would come charge us. This process continued for about 200 yards until we were out of the field. When we left they were all gathered around the fence as to say, "we showed you". Luckily we made it out alive, and really that's all you can ask for. Chase and Chastan, one... Cows, zero.

A creekside thought

The sun is about to set on day 78 of the trail. After a short day out of York, PA we are in the tent and ready for an early night's rest. It's amazing that leaves are covering the trees now and the sun is warming the Earth, it is almost summer. It's equally amazing that our thru hike is over halfway done, and just like anything else, the second half will fly by twice as fast as the first. It has been an unbelievable experience so far and I know there is so much yet to explore.

Halfway

Yesterday we passed the official halfway point on the trail. Now we are counting down the miles to Katahdin! We celebrated halfway by attempting to eat a half gallon of ice cream at the general store. I came up short but Chastan ate his in full.

Hey Little Guy

Found this salamander on the trail, his name is Lewis.

Nasty Weather

We are in for the night staying in a very nice and well kept shelter. It's been a long one and the weather was wonderful this morning through most of the day. This afternoon brought some really heavy rain and strong thunderstorms which are continuing even now. We are very thankful to be dry and warm tonight. We are waking up early so we can go stay in York, PA. Life is good on the trail. We are living the dream. Goodnight.

Mason Dixon Line

Welcome to PA! We are no longer in the south y'all...
